Do not buy digitally.
Welp... I was excited to have this in my digital collection but, like other's have been saying, the quality is junk - Whole pages are omitted, discoloration, misaligned panels... i mean... Is there even quality control at Viz? How did this get past them? It's like someone drunk scanned some pages and passed it on to another drunk person to finish and did it all on a 30 year old pc with a faulty disk-drive. I hope I can get my money back. Check the pics I've uploaded to see how bad it is.

Excellent first volume but contains a few embarrassing errors
This review is for the Kindle version.I was first introduced to Blue Exorcist through the anime in Spring 2011. I loved it so much that I started reading the manga through scanlations (this is all that was available at the time). In the years since I've become quite the expert on all things Blue Exorcist, and there's a certain degree of quality that I've come to expect from this series. Part of the reason why I subscribed to Shonen Jump online is to read the latest Blue Exorcist chapter every month in official, legal English, and after a long time I finally decided to purchase all of the to-date released volumes in English.Katoh-sensei's series is beautiful and an example of shonen manga at its finest, and it is not for her work that I must downrate this volume a bit. Rather, VIZ did not do their best on this English release and that's a serious blunder on an otherwise perfect volume. There are several mistakes on the names of characters, such as Shiemi being introduced incorrectly as "Murayama" when her family name is Moriyama (which can be seen correctly printed on the character files a few pages later). In addition, several pages are much lighter than others, that is to say that the ink looks washed out (almost like a computer scan) and it's jarring between the other, normal looking pages. While these issues are not major enough to have ruined my enjoyment of the volume, they are embarrassing for a professional release, especially for a well respected company like Viz Media. I do so hope that in later printings the mistakes will be corrected.Overall, this is a very faithful translation and production of the first volume of Katoh-sensei's amazing manga.

“I need to become a respectable person.”
Orphan Rin Okumura and his brother Yukio were raised by famous exorcist Father Fujimoto. What Rin didn’t know was that he was being protected from the secret of his true nature and status as the child of Satan himself. After a heated argument leads to a dramatic and dire upsetting of the status quo, Rin vows to fight his dual heritage and become an exorcist himself. It won’t be easy…Blue Exorcist takes a solid central idea and really runs with it. The key, as with any great story, is in the characters. The opening chapters firmly illustrate the current conditions of Rin’s life and naturally convey the motivations and frustrations behind his attitude and actions, as well as those of Father Fujimoto. The second half of the volume establishes his brother Yukio as another vital character with his own distinct views, goals, and personality. This all works together to ground the plot and action and make everything engaging. And there’s plenty of action to get into. From dealing with bullies to facing the truth behind his situation to training at school, Rin’s journey contains a lot of chaos and it’s all well done. The tension is kept up nicely and the entire atmosphere adds nice layers to Rin’s internal conflicts and difficult choices.Blue Exorcist strives to transcend it’s typical Shounen trappings and elements with depth. And so far it’s succeeding.

Rin is awesome!
I'll start off by saying that I'm reading this series after watching it's animated counterpart. That being said, it's a great story with interesting characters and beautiful art. It finds that difficult balance between conflict and levity, and gives a central character that you really want to root for in the form of Rin Okumura. He's a little brat you can't help but love.I really enjoy stories about characters who find out something about themselves that turns their world upside down, and this is a perfect example. Seeing Rin struggle with the revelation of his heritage and work hard to make a place for himself is really inspiring. I can't wait to see how he'll grow and impact the lives around him as the series continues.

A Strong Start, A Bit Rushed
Those familiar with the anime will know quite a bit more detail than this particular book provides. The needed bare bones are there, but it is a bit harder to understand or share the feelings of the characters other than Rin with what little context we are given: this though is in comparison to the anime, which had the time to be more in depth. The book is book one, only, and with that in mind, it is a great beginning. It does have a bit of a rushed sense, like some of the elements could have afforded more attention or detail, like the author had more planned but left it to flashbacks later or scrapped it completely. While this helps explain the confusion of Rin, for whom the events are rushed as well, knowing from the later parts of the series how important these first events are I feel the author could have afforded to make two books out of this and leave the details in. Still, a good start to one of my favourite series.

I love it!
I couldn't get through the entire anime sadly, (only watched about four episodes). But I did love the series and all of the characters so I decided to read the manga! It came quickly, around four hours before estimated time AND in amazing quality. I would honestly suggest it if you like manga and or didn't watch the anime!

Definitely getting them all!
I have a child that before quarantine had checked these out at the library and fell in love with the series and now wants to own them all so definitely a great series!

Supernatural/fantasy/mystery manga
As a stand-alone volume this is a decent opener and I personally am very fond of Kato’s style. Some might criticise Blue Exorcist as using lots of worn out tropes, but while it does have a lot in common with other manga, the tropes are well used. You may notice, even from the first few volumes, that Kato steers away from extended action sequences and pays more attention to world/myth building and character relationships. If you have a fondness for battles then this might not be for you but, as someone who likes fantasy and mystery novels, I found it all the more enjoyable.

Amazing!
I really enjoyed this. I originally bought it because I wanted to read the manga to see how it differed form the anime and also because the first season of the anime had an amazing ending then in season 2 they acted like the ending of season one never happened! I recommend this to everyone who loves manga and it won’t disappoint!

Great read
Like a lot of people I'd started watching the anime then decided to purchase the first three manga volumes and I'm glad I did. The artwork is lovely and easy to read, and A LOT happens within just one volume. Though exorcism is a very heavy topic Kazue Kato does it in a very easy to understand way throwing in lots of light hearted commentary along the way so everything isn't so heavy and dark all the time, which is one the the main things I love about this series. The characters are all incredibly likeable especially the main character Rin Okumura. I also love the little bonus comics at the end of the book and a little section on demons and the small character profiles are a delight. I definitely recommend this series to any anime or manga fan, I think once you start reading this you're definitely hooked.

Really recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy or supernatural things
Having watched the anime first and knowing the basic plot line the manga fully expands on just about everything! It even gives you little character quirks that wouldn't be seen in the anime. Really recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy or supernatural things
